To begin you need to visit a trainer to learn Apprentice Engineering. They can be easily found in every city. Apprentice Engineering can be trained starting from a level 5, and with him you can level your profession to 75. I will tell you which stuff to keep. Otherwise just sell them and get some great profits.

You should visit your trainer and learn Artisan Engineering which allows 300 maximum skill. About this time you also have an option of specialization in ether Gnomish or Goblin Engineering.
Gnoms make gadgets while Goblins make stuff that go BOOM. Later ones are my favorite.
